Then an object that stands out from the rest with live vibrant color that catches the person eyes and makes them think "kewl". I do think simple is the best way to go in any design. I think it really depends on the design and how many elements need to be represented. For example, for a project I'm working on right now, colour is being used to establish a sense of identity for various visual elements. Navigation is orange, secondary navigation is off-gray, active items are blue, bar graphs are green. Well, there’s no hard rule on just three. I agree completely with your methodology. If you count black (and I do), I’ve got three as well. I agree completely with your methodology.

Form follows function--that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one. When it comes to arguments about usability and aesthetics, I like to quote Frank Lloyd Wright.

Three colors. Two is too for, any more is two "busy". This site has the grey, the bluish-tuquoise, and that yellow-orange. My site actually has those same relative colors... ;) Simplicity is always better. Design is about accessibility, not beauty. That is the way I have always looked at a design. Three colors.
